The first generation of AI content tools sold a promise: pick a brand voice from a dropdown, type a brief, hit generate, ship. The promise turned out to be hollow. Voice dropdowns are pre-baked archetypes ("witty," "professional," "energetic") that approximate everyone and resemble no one. Type a brief, hit generate, and the output reads like every other brand using the same dropdown.
The deeper failure is structural. AI models do not learn your brand from a setting. They learn it from constraints - examples of on-brand and off-brand copy, banned phrases, voice dimensions written down, claim discipline. Without those constraints, the model regresses to the mean of its training corpus. The mean is generic.
The third failure is editorial. AI generates fast; humans rarely keep up. Most teams ship the third or fourth draft because reviewing every draft does not scale. Off-brand drift compounds. Six months in, the brand voice on social no longer matches the voice on the website.
The fix is the brand bible plus a validation step that runs on every draft before it ships. Not after. Before.
